Book Review: Camp Boyfriend by J.K Rock (Spoilers)

18944356The summer of her dreams is about to get a reality check.

They said it couldn't be done, but geeky sophomore Lauren Carlson transformed herself into a popular girl after moving to a new school halfway across the country. Amazing what losing her braces and going out for cheerleading will do. Only trouble is, the popular crowd is wearing on Lauren's nerves and she can't wait to return to summer camp where she's valued for her brain instead of her handsprings. She misses her old friends and most of all, her long time camp-only boyfriend, Seth. This year she intends to upgrade their relationship to year-round status once she's broken up with her new, jock boyfriend, Matt. He doesn't even begin to know the real her, a girl fascinated by the night sky who dreams of discovering new planets and galaxies.

But Matt isn't giving her up without a fight. As he makes his case to stay together, Lauren begins to realize his feelings run deeper than she ever would have guessed. What if the guy she thought she was meant to be with forever isn't really The One? Returning to Camp Juniper Point was supposed to ground her uprooted life, but she's more adrift than ever. Everything feels different and soon Lauren's friends are turning on her and both guys question what she really wants. As summer tensions escalate, Lauren wonders if she's changed more than she thought. Will her first big discovery be herself?

I was pulled in by the summery story line, and feel to this novel. The days are getting warmer and so I felt it was a perfect read.
I was in the mood for a light, fluffy sort of book, and that's what this book truly delivers on. It's a great summertime read.
From the instant that Seth's character showed up, I knew I was going to root for him. He was my favorite character by far.
One downside though, was that I found Lauren to be really annoying for most of the novel. I did enjoy seeing her character development, but it felt like it was coming a little bit too slowly. She kept going backwards and forwards, seemingly in an instant. She'd see one guy and want to be with him, then see the next and she wanted to be with him. I honestly just found her pretty annoying.
I was also disappointed by the ending, but that's probably more due to personal preference. I was rooting for Seth so much, so when she chose Matt, I felt really disappointed. I truly felt like Seth was the best match for her, and I was actually shocked when it turned out to be Matt.

On the whole, this book is a great summer read, and there are some really fantastic moments in it, so despite the slightly, for me, disappointing ending. This was a very enjoyable read, and I would definitely recommend it.

  1. Thank you so much for the review, Hannah, and I was so thrilled you joined us for the Read-a-Long! I hope you will consider sticking with the series a bit longer to see what happens to Seth. His story, Camp Crush, will be out late this summer :-)
